Ok, so I had an interview with Time Warner Cable of Maine last Friday. During my initial interview with a supervisor I had to go through the typical generic questions like “Why do you want to work here?” and “What is an achievement you’ve had recently?” “blah blah blah?” Then we went through some role playing situations. Before diving too far in I should mention that this was an interview for a Broadband Customer Tech Support agent or BCTS (for the acronym freaks) which means my job will be to answer the phone when people call in to say their inet isn’t working and I try to diagnose it over the phone and using some programs.
Anyways, I passed all the “tests” and the questioning and was moved to the manager who eve told me his job for this interview was the try and convince me not to take the job. To sum it up his argument was “people are paying a lot of money for our services and they are almost never happy while having to call you.” My initial reaction was “what’s new?” since this is what I have to deal with pretty much on a regular basis anyhow. So, after I passed that “test” he offered me the job.
The job would entail me working 230p to 11p…second shift. Working second shift isn’t a problem for me, in all actuality I prefer it. My only problem is that I have band practice wed and sat nights… this may put a damper on that as well as that getting time off for shows will be tough. But they have this thing called a dream sheet where I put down the days, times I would LIKE to have off. They strongly suggest that I work at least 1 weekend day a week… again, what’s new? preferably both, but i requested my days off and we’ll see what happens. I also have to work 2 holidays a year, but I get double time and a half when i work them so it’s not really bad.
The benefits are pretty much the same as with SW, 401k, full health, dental and vision along with free internet and free HD digital cable. I also get digital phone for $20 not that I need or want that. There are also several perks such as free tickets to sporting events and such. The pay is slightly less, but it’s a 10min bike ride vs. a 40+/- drive so I see it as evening out if not surpassing it in the long run.
Well, to put it bluntly, I accepted the job. Today is Monday. I have to give my notice tomorrow because I’ll be starting on the 13th. Which is very short notice, but I can just squeak out the 2wk notice. That is probably the part I’m least excited about due to the most likely confrontation that will occur, not to mention that awkward remaining 2weeks since it’s just me working all the time anyhow. But whatever.
